Impermanence 2009

Well.... the day had to come didn't it? The day when I would leave Japan and return to England, to home. That day is tomorrow.

Home!? It's a strange word for me. Years spent following my father around the globe made me realise that home really is where you lay your hat. However, I have felt something for Tokyo that I haven't felt anywhere else; a sense of belonging. My spirit feels at home here. That's a feeling I've never experienced before.

It could all be in my head, that is a possibility. I don't think so though. So I will look into moving back upon my return. It won't be easy. The economy lies in tatters right now, the jobs market is flooded with capable, intelligent people fighting for a limited set of jobs. I've got recruitment consultants contacting me about fake jobs, just so they can put me on their books. grrr.

At the beginning of April I'll be in the land of unemployment. Despite the fear and uncertainty I'm looking forward to it. It's a time to stop and consider my position in life. To focus on a few things I've not had the opportunity to do. Like music for example!

I will look back at this Japan trip with fond affection. I've met some amazing people and seen some wonderful sights. Let the good times roll...

a fanfare of grass cutters

The sun is shining through the blinds of my window, there's blue sky, big white fluffy clouds and a sound. A fanfare of petrol engined grass cutters. What a great sound. Winter is ending and along with it the long nights and cold. I'm alive.

alarms, the weekend, plans

The new technique of avoiding pressing the snooze button on my alarm is working well. Last year I sometimes would press snooze 4-5 times on a morning. I don't think those extra snooze minutes add valuable sleep time so I'm trying to break the habit. This has been achieved by hiding the alarm in different places in the bedroom each night. By the time I'd found the alarm this morning I was awake. Result. :)

The weekend was fairly chilled. Friday night involved a few drinks with some friends I haven't seen for a while followed by a quick jamming session in their kitchen. On Saturday I had a game of squash with my brother followed by a swim and a relaxing sauna whilst the night involved a trip to the cinema with Mark and my brother to watch Apocolypto. It's the new film by Mel Gibson and I was impressed. I thought it was fantastic, despite it's gore and violence. Sunday disappeared far too fast, I went to the gym on the morning and spent the afternoon messing around on the computer.

This weeks going to be fairly busy. It's Battlestar Galactica night tonight with Bryan, tomorrow is a jamming session with Sou & Caroline followed by the weekly band night on a Thursday.

Helicopter!

This weekend I did something I've wanted to do for a long time. I went up in a helicopter. One of my work colleagues has recently passed his Private Pilots License in Helicopters and required a guinea pig to be his first passenger. Naturally I jumped at the chance!

The experience was so cool. We rolled the little R22 out of its hanger, filled it up and went through pre-flight checks. John then ensured there were no Royal flights in our area and sorted out the flight plan. Then we climbed into the tiny little yellow helicopter, got air traffic control authorisation and up we went. It was so ace!
We flew to a private field (owned by some of his friends) using the A55, the Shropshire Union Canal and a railway line to navigate. John pick a field devoid of cattle, flew a landing circuit and touched down. After a quick coffee and chat with the owners of the farm we went up again. We flew via Beeston Castle (which we flew a circuit around) back to Hawarden air field. Ace!!!!

VNV Nation

I saw VNV Nation live last night. Considering that i've been a fan for many years it's mad that last night was the first time watching them live.

They rocked, the venue (Hex, Birkenhead) was small which added to the closeness i felt with the band.
If only i could go to the Sheffield gig too....

On a side note: I sincerely wish there were more people out there who balanced their words with actions.

Meditation builds up the brain

I meditate every now and again, so my interest was tickled when i read this article today:
article

Quote:
"Meditating does more than just feel good and calm you down, it makes you perform better – and alters the structure of your brain, researchers have found."

Only thing is it doesn't mention what form of meditation was used.

i never could

I close my eyes
to think of you
as i always do
in dark times
and sad songs

where are you my love?
though i tried to give up
i never could....

Journal Postings and Security

I made the decision today to set the security of most, if not all, posts to be visible only by my friends. For that reason, all previous entries have now been set to visible by friends only.

I'm sure that as time goes by I'll put the odd unsecured post, we'll just have to see.
